Animal Idioms

  1. Is there anybody in particular who does the donkey work at home / at work? (i.e. the hard boring part)
  2. Have you ever felt like a fish out of water? In which circumstances could you possibly feel like that?
  3. On which occasion have you had to take the bull by the horns and decided to do something?
  4. Do you know anyone who usually makes a pig of himself / herself? (i.e. eat and drink too much, be very greedy)
  5. Do you know anyone whose bark is worse than their bite?
  6. Can you remember an occasion when someone you know had to walk away with his / her tail between their legs?
  7. What political examples can you think of where it would be / it was better to let sleeping dogs lie? (i.e. not mention something that happened in the past to avoid arguments or problems)
  8. When were you last in the doghouse? What happened? (i.e. somebody - usually your partner is annoyed with you about something)
  9. Can you think of any political event / personal circumstance / financial business, etc. where you can / could smell a rat? (i.e. think that something is wrong or that somebody is trying to deceive you)
  10. Can you think of any celebrity where one of the spouses got the lion’s share of what they had previously possessed together? Or anyone who claimed they got the lion’s share of the credit for the success of a film / play / show, etc. (i.e. the largest or best part)
  11. Can you remember a time when you thought to yourself you shouldn’t have counted your chickens before they had hatched? (i.e. not be too confident that something will be successful)
  12. Do you know anyone who is impervious to criticism, when criticism is like water off a duck’s back to him / her? (i.e criticism does not affect him)
